    DefaultDewclaws...

We are going to adopt a 9 month old lab here at the local APS. Noticed today that he still had his dewclaws. Should I have them removed or is he too old? Never had a dog with them. What kind of problems can they have if left there?

I'm one of those folks that removes dewclaws on my pups, but I absolutely would not remove them on an older puppy/dog unless they are causing serious problems. It's a pretty painful surgery at this point. Leave the boy's toes alone.

Halle has hers and Maverick doesn't Halle is always breaking the nail especially this time of year when she is running on the hard crusty snow even though the nail is kept trimed. However I wouldn't have them removed.

All of ours have their...the were all rescues except the beagle and we never even considered removing them. I don't know what kind of problems can occur if you leave them...we've never had any problems at all. At his age, I would leave his poor feetsies alone, I know I wouldn't want it done ;D

I think they're only a problem if they're on the back paws. Sam still has hers on the front. No problems so far.

Ahh ok. I just wasn't sure why they were removed at all as a puppy. Ill tell the new pup when I get him everyone says leave his Fri-toes alone!

All of my dogs have their "thumbs" and any puppy born here will keep theirs. Keep it trimmed short and it won't be any more of a problem than any of the other nails.

Baloo has his and Peanut does not have hers, I notice that Baloo has a MUCH easier time gripping something to chew on it. :-\

I say leave them be, they're there for a reason.

Yeap= They are actually better to have them!! Bella has hers, Lilo's doesn't. And it
makes me sad sometimes watching Lilo try to grab bones and that. I didn't know then
    what I know now!!!
