    DefaultDiscipline??

How do you discipline your dogs...and by this i mean if you command them to do something like sit, down here etc and they dont do it...what do you do?

Ive been told never to say a command over and over as it weakens it and the dog learns it is ok not to do it 1st time dont know how true that is.

I take a hold of his collar "help" him. Yes, repeating the command over and over will "weaken" it. However, I will repeat a command if I honestly think Caleb didn't hear me the first time.

That is very true. When we train and Kody doesn't follow the command I give him a quick, light, tug on his leash or collar and then repeat the command. For example if the command was down, I would do the leash correction and then put slight pressure down on the leash while repeating the command. You need to guide them towards the goal. I am sure someone else will explain better.

What I was taught, was to immediately correct the dog. i.e. physically bring him her to the position commanded. This is not a brutal correction, it is an instructional correction. i.e. Hey! sweetie (or dummy) this is what i want you to do when I say ......

I found this works really well when teaching commands to a dog at your side or in front of you. If you ave trouble with the same commands at a distance, you aren't ready for them yet. Some of the problem that i had, was that HK thought 'Sit' meant sit at my side. So I had to enlist help to get her to sit at a distance from me.

If they ignore a command they already know either they don't know the command well or enough or there is little to no incentive for them to comply.

    Ditto.

Also, sometimes my timing was bad. So I let it go for a minute then try again.
