We took Kelly in for her yearly wellness exam, she will be 15 on March 8th. The vet noticed a heart murmur indicating possible congestive heart failure in the near future. She's only about a stage 1-2 murmur, but at her age it's not unexpected. She said her own dog has a stage 4-6 murmur. So she told us what to look out for, not to exercise her excessively (we let her set her own pace) and coughing while at rest. She needs to lose a few pounds too. Finally after all these years, the competition with Dakota has made her want to eat every day, and of course being older she doesn't get the exercise she needs anymore.
So..we will take her back in for a checkup in 6 months to see where the murmur/heart problem is at that point. If it gets worse..she will give me some Lasix for her breathing if her lungs start to fill up with fluids.
Other than that she is in pretty good shape. No cataracts, more like a person who needs reading glasses the vet said. She was very surprised how good a shape she was in for her age.
Hope you are able to manager the murmur. Good thoughts on the way.
Thank you..we hope so too! We're happy she's still doing so well at her age! We know it's inevitable that we'll lose her. So..till then we will just take as good care of her as possible.
Thanks for the good thoughts!! Jackie
