Sam and I went out the front door on the way to the store yesterday evening. He was FRISKY. We didn't go to the park in the morning so he had had no work and was excited to be GOING somewhere. I normally don't have the leash on him when we go out, and yesterday didn't have the e-collar turned on. We start down the sidewalk. My car is parked in the street right in front of the sidewalk. We're headed toward it. I look over at my neighbors diagonally across the street and see that she is out in the front yard with their big retriever type dog, AND is playing ball with him!!!!!!!!! OH MY.
I look immediately at Sam, and yes he's seen it. He's looking intently in that direction, his ears are forward, and his whole body is saying Oh, oh, oh, a BALL, LOOK mom, they're playing ball over there, I want to go, I want to go, they're playing BALL, and I'm SURE it's MY ball, that dog got it somehow, OH I want to go........
I said no, here, in my firmest no nonsense voice. He turned his head and looked at me, but his whole body continued to be facing the Owen's. I could read his mind. A ball, do what she said, a ball, do what she said, a BALL, do what she said?????? I helped him out by repeating, NO, HERE, and sure enough that good, excellent, very best dog, turned and came to me, and hopped up into the car.
I was MOST pleased! YAY Sam!!!!!!!!!!!!
And yes, I do normally have the collar turned on, because I know that a dog can choose to bolt after something anytime, and a car could be coming, altho our street is secluded, and doesn't have many cars. I was in a big hurry yesterday, and had forgotten to turn it on.
It helps me to think of the progress we've made. Remember two summers ago he didn't even come when called, much less give up something he REALLY wanted to do, because I said no.
Good boy Sam
Frances, I've said it before and I'll say it again. I am SO IMPRESSED with what you've done with him. I'm also very impressed with how quickly he learns. Smart boy!!!

Sam, You are the greatest.
Sam I Am, Isn't it fantastic when you see that all the work is paying off. 3 months ago I wouldn't have known the feeling after having dogs all my life. Decided to put the effort into HK, and it is great.
