    DefaultKassabella (Question for you)

In another post you mentioned that Ernie won't let you touch his feet, ears or put flea treatment on him, my Misty is the same and I was wondering if you had any suggestions or can tell me what you've tried with Ernie. She's gotten a little better about letting me look in her ears (i made a game out of "checking for potatoes"), but no way could I clean them, same with the feet I can touch a bit but bring out the clippers no way.

I'm more concerned about getting the Frontline on her, you'd think I was trying to kill her I've tried all types of sneak attacks and usually only get a little bit on. It's the tick protection I really need, she got quite a few last season (and it's not like she sits still for me to get them off .

    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Not Chris... but Bear had big time feet issues when we first got him, I used to use treats in one hand, which distracted him while doing what I needed to with his feet, praising him while was good and then give the treat when I was done. He still doesn't like his feet messed with, but I can do it without all of the drama.

Oops I did forget to mention that it doesn't help AT ALL if I have treats. Even her beloved food can not tempt her.

Eric has good advise, but it didn't work for Ernie.

You need to desensitize them. I did it gently and slowly.

I can touch him while he is asleep but haven't yet been able to put flea treament on him.

Ernies previous owners never touched his ears, feet etc.
To get flea treatment on him three adults would hold him down. I wasn't aware of this and when I tried he went hysterical. Never seen anything like it. It took ages to calm him down.

He hadn't been trained, so treats were useless. Every time he sat near me I would gently put my hand near his feet, ears or tail. I got closer and closer until I gently touched them. I never forced the issue. I kept at it every day and night.

If we are sitting on the couch relaxed I can now part the hair on his neck without him biting or panicing, but if he sees or smells the packet he is off. Fortunately we don't get ticks here and he swims daily so I don't force the issue.
He lets me put the clippers near his feet and if I am quick or he is distracted I can put drops in his ears or look in them.
Vets do Erns nails if ever he has to be knocked out.

Kassabella that is Misty to the tee, if she sees or hears that Frontline package off she goes to hide. Thanks for answering and I'll just keep trying.

Ernie gets into the recycling so I left an empty Frontline container on top. It did two things. He wouldn't go near the recycling, realised it didn't hurt him and got used to the smell. I asked the neighbour if I could have his ones and kept putting them there.

I keep showing him the used ones saying good boy and leaving it near him. He is better, but taking time as I am not as consistent as I should be.

If Misty isn't as terrified as Ernie was I am sure it wont take as long.

Oh I think she is as terrified, over a year ago I heard a suggestion to just quickly put on while she's eating, well..... I tried and now she will not come in to her bowl until I leave the room. She does not forget at all ???

That is a great idea, I'll empty one out and leave it somewhere she goes all the time. Maybe if she has time to inspect while I'm at work she'll become less afraid of it. Thanks.
