    DefaultStem cell injection for dogs

Did anyone see the Nightline piece on stem cells for dogs last night? Basically the took fat issue from the dog, who had hip dysplasia, seperated out the stem cells and re-injected them. The stem cells are supposed to help the body heal itself. Supposedly it was helping. I guess they have been doing this with horses for a while with approx 70% success and the cost is less than hip replacemnt by quite abit.

Well, they do it with people, so I suppose it would work for animals, too.

The big deal with this is they extract the stem cells from the same animal they are re-injecting them, if this can be moved to humans it takes away any ethical issues that now exist with stem cells and their source.

Actually they do that with humans also. My SU had two stem cell transplants--using his own stem cells. They do it with cancer patients all the time. I also have read that they are using the same process for people that have peripheral artery disease with some success.

I did noit know that. I thought the only thing they used with humans is embryonic stem cells

Thanks for this Eric. Very interesting and will do some research into this.

A few N.Zers have had it for Huntingtons disease. I am not sure the long term effect.

Wow - so interesting. Let's hope it works as well in other animals as it does in horses.
