Paddy is 11 years old. He has been with us from the age of 7 weeks.
From the beginning I have always laid out a little baby blanket on the floor for him to "lay by me, Paddy". A baby blanket, or little crib sized quilt... something. He always waited for the words: "Want your blankie, Pad? Here's your blankie" and spread it out before him.
Now, all these years later, I wonder. Is it the chicken or the egg? Does he wait for that blanket because it's what he likes and expects, or does he wait for the "blankie words" because he thinks he isn't to "lay by me" without it?
Either way, it's awfully sweet. He simply won't "settle" for the evening by me on the floor if I do not fling that blankie down for him.
(I love lazy Sunday afternoons for thoughts like this.)

Sounds like a nice little ritual! Dogs are big on ritual, ya know.

Sounds like a nice ritual. If that was routine for all these years...he probably feels comfortable with it. Sounds like a cute thing. I bet it makes Paddy feel special.
Paddy you are the best! Sounds like a good ritual to me. I bet it gives him a sense of security when you say that to him!
Oh how cute. I am jealous.
I think it is a bit of both.
Sorry to hijack your lovely story Nance but thought this might explain it.
Kassy had Mr Grey and if she wanted me to sit with her she would put Mr grey on the couch. If she sat on a friends knee she would put Mr Grey there first. If I said go get Mr grey she would go and get him.
In a way , dogs really are simple creatures who like things to be the way "they are supposed to be". And to Paddy, the blankie is just supposed to by there to lay by mom - that's just how it is!
Dogs love routine, and the blanket is part of the routine.
awww, always a sweet story. Pad loves his blankie and his mama.
No wonder Paddy looks so noble! He gets treated like a king! Beautiful story.
