Hey all, thanks for your care and concern. Mom and Dad took Rio in to the vet this morning (I had to teach an 8:00 class in the city) and the Doc said that it is not a serious injury and comparable to a "strawberry" that an athlete gets from skidding across the field or court or whatever. He said that the only danger is infection, and he went ahead and took him into surgery to put stitches in and give him an antibiotic shot. We've got 4 days worth of pain pills IF he needs them, and Doc even said he could go hunting whenever. . but we are benching him for now. His leg is a bit stiff but he seems to be feeling fine. The vet was out of town all weekend (which is why we couldn't get a hold of him) but said that the wait did not make a difference healing wise. Meanwhile, my parents have been letting Rio sleep between them. . . and of course he's in heaven .
Then the vet had to try to salvage an ear on a german shorthair that got it cut up while hunting as well :'(
Thank you guys for your support!!
Rio came back from hunting today with a triangle of skin flapping under his right foreleg. We put veterinary salve on it (use it on all hunting scrapes etc) but the vet wrap bandage won't stay up on his leg (it is right about in his armpit).
I tried the vet's after hours number and didn't get anything. It isn't bleeding much, really just skimmed under the skin, whatever it was that cut him.
What kind of attention do I give it until we can get ahold of the vet?
I would go to the pharmacy and gets some steri-strips to hold it together until you can reach the vet. Hope Rio heals quickly.
Just try to keep it as clean as you can.
If it's just skin that is lifted up, and if you can't get to the vet within 24 hours, the vet will probably just trim the skin off. I know that sounds gross, but skin will regrow.
Hoping you can see a vet soon!!
That's kinda what Mom said. Now she's doing the "told ya so" thing .
He's chilling out under the dining room table. . . I can't believe the emergency service isn't picking up. . . but Mom'll take him in in the morning since I have to get up at 5:30 to teach class at 8:00.

Poor Rio. Heal quickly. Nothing more to add to the good advice you got already.
I just this week picked up two more tubes of "EMT Gel" from Tractor Supply. It is far and away the best first aid treatment for cuts, punctures, skin tears and the assorted injuries that hunting Labs seem to get on a regular basis.
The old Gel that I had was 3 years old and I'd used it a number of times on the dawgs and even to stop bleeding on a nasty cut that I sustained last summer. It's probably still fine but I wanted fresh tubes, one for the first aid kit in the truck and the other I carry with me whenever we hunt or train. The key is to make sure that the wound is well cleaned before applying the gel. Read more here ...
