DefaultToo bad people aren't this way

This duck came into the pond below the house this morning. Both dawgs spotted it and I saw it only because they were staring so intently. It is not a local bird. It is part of the migration and is either the lone survivor of a small group or was separated from its bretheren during last night's flight. It was obviously tired and yet quite nervous.

Didn't take but a few minutes for it to spot some of our pond mallards and swim right over to them. They accepted the stranger immediately even though he was of a different color and can't speak their "language". Lesson to learn from that, me thinketh.

(3rd duck from the right in case you can't see him there)

Aren't animals amazing. We do have a lot to learn. Do you think the duck will stay or just rest up a bit and continue it's journey?

"Birds of a feather flock together"

I would be amazed if any of "our mallards" (all of whom either were hatched here or joined us at 5 weeks of age) left with migration ducks coming through the area this fall. Even though they are not wing clipped in any manner and in fact do fly around our property from pond to pond, the eating is just way too easy for them to leave.

Similarly, it would be extraordinarily shocking to me if any non-mallard visitor stayed with us for more than a day or two to eat, rest up and then leave to seek out others of its own kind. Even if this duck is a juvenile (hatched this spring) the migration instinct and desire to be with its own kind and find a mate is so strong that it will undoubtedly continue his journey on south by himself and meet up with more just like him.

Oh and by the way ... this is why I refer to him as being of the male gender ...
