I posted a while back about Champ having hip dysplasia and potentially needing a TPO surgery. Well, yesterday we had our meeting with the orthopedic surgeon our vet recommended us to, and she was fabulous. Very knowledgeable, helpful, and, to my surprise, not in a rush to cut. After reviewing his x-rays, and going over his history, he is going in tomorrow for a full work-up and, if necessary, surgery. The ortho surgeon said that she will conduct a Penn-HIP evaluation to determine his hip laxity, as well as do some testing to see how much arthritic damage has been done to the hip joints to determine if Champ is a good candidate for TPO. If he is a good candidate and his hip laxity is low (or high, whichever means that his hip muscles won't hold the joint together properly), she will go right ahead with the surgery that day so that he only needs to be anesthetized once. Anyways- your prayers and good thoughts tomorrow are appreciated, as I'm sure I'm going to be a mess (and I have a huge project due at work on Friday, so I can't afford to be a mess).
Also - for those of you who have gone through surgery or other injuries with a young dog (Champ is almost 9 months) - any helpful tips on how to keep sane while he is on crate rest for 6 weeks (or longer)? The vet said she will send us home with tranquilizers to keep him calm, but I still can't picture the little guy being so highly restricted for so long. Any ideas from the experienced are much appreciated.
Thanks so much for listening - it is so nice to have a place to share this kind of thing.
Will keep Champ in my thoughts and prayers.
Good thoughts for Champ. What time is the surgery?
Sending you (and Champ) many good thoughts & prayers for tomorrow. I can certainly see why you are worried, but sounds like Champ is in good hands!
Good luck. Get well soon and healing thoughts coming your way.
sending good thoughts for champ tomorrow!
Sending good thoughts for Champ.
My vet's Golden Retriever just had this done about eight months ago. He's a young dog, and the surgeon that did it told her he's good to go. In fact, she competed with him this past weekend in agility for the first time and he got a couple of ribbons!!!
Good wishes for Champ.
Only the best for you Champ.
I will have plenty of time to send you good thoughts along with those for Hershey tomorrow.
Hershey Kisses, In charge of getting Ed out to the dog park so that he gets some exercise.
Good luck Champ! Sending lots of good thoughts from here.
