Puff and I are just back from the 25th annual interdenominational "Blessing of the Animals" service near the Topeka zoo at Gage Park.
The clergy this time was from 1st Christian, Trinity Lutheran, & Metropolitan Community churches as well as my Episcopal church (which initiated and sustains it) along with our acolytes. In past years we've also had Baptist, Catholic, Methodist, UCC, and a variety of other clergy participating.
There was about 200+ people and pets (mainly dogs but a few caged ferrets and cats). A few years ago there was a llama and a donkey.
We had a hymn ("All Creatures of our God & King" -- same tune as "All Things Bright & Beautiful"); a prayer of St. Francis; a reading from Genesis (9: 8-17), The Rainbow Covenant; other prayers + St. Francis' Prayer ("Lord, make us instruments of your peace...") and then 4 lines formed outside to 4 clergy who individually blessed our animals while one stayed inside and blessed the animals owned by those disabled.
I thought there'd be more Labs there. There were a few service dogs that were Labs but only 3 others beside Puff.
Puff got blessed and the clergy doing it got a Puff kiss/face lick in gratitude. (Puff was wearing her "Licker License").
Puff also enjoyed the opportunity to sniff more dog butts.

Sounds like you've had a lovely day, and any chance to stiff butts is a good day in a dog's book!

That sounds like a really cool service!

Our church held the annual blessing on Thursday. It was in the school courtyard. Picture 240 boisterous children and approximately 40 shell shocked pets, including a loose cat held in its owner's arms. We hung out at the back of the crowd because I had this awful premonition of BJ cutting a wide path of destruction. It was a good thing I put a harness on him because I think he would have hung himselft trying to lick as many faces as possible. The beagles on the other hand were angels considering a bunny was carried right by them. We never did get blessed but the ceremony was very nice. Maybe next year...
