What is the best way to deal with aggressive loose dogs while walking with your own dogs leashed? I know that getting away from the dog is the best thing, but what if that is not possible. How have you dealt with such situations?
For us, it seems better now that I have 2 dogs. The loose dogs on our walking route seem to break off the charge when I turn, with my two, toward them. Not sure that is always wise, hence my question.
Where are these aggressive dogs coming from? if they are in your neighbourhood, do not hesitate in reporting them to animal control. The dogs may be aggressive but it's the irresponsible owners who are the source of the problem.
Thanks for both suggestions. I've called animal control on another dog previously, and it worked, guess it may be time. I'm a little leary of pepper spray/mace because I'm worried about spraying my two in the process. I guess practice would be in order. To expand the question, what about those one time encounters with dogs not of the neighborhood, is there a "method"?
I carry pepper spray, a small air horn (sounds like the big one) a cane, and cell phone. Haven't used anything on a dog yet, but the air horn scared off a cat who always challenged them. She keeps her distance now.
