Was talking to a gal at the agility trial this weekend. She has Weims. Her one Weim bitch is 8 years old now and she was telling me all the things this dog has had wrong with her. She had Thyroid cancer and went through chemo for it. She had a huge Papalloma virus that created a gaping hole on her side about a foot in diameter that they would have to drain and it was like egg yolk coming out of it (gross). She then had a bout with STREP infection that left her coat a mess. Both of these things are very uncommon in dogs, and are related to a breakdown in the autoimmune system.
Recently she had the dog at the vet for a checkup. The vet palpated her stomach and felt a rather large mass. She figured it was cancer. They did a needle biopsy. It came back positive for SURGICAL SPONGE!!!
This dog had a surgical sponge inside of her since she was spayed at three years old. No wonder the poor thing suffered from autoimmune breakdown.
They did have the sponge removed.
Can you imagine? I would be livid!!!
Poor girl! I'm glad they found it and removed it tho.

All those years of suffering......
I'm not the "suing type", but that definitely calls for some legal action. > >

That poor dog. That is a shame. I guess not all surgical procedures require a sponge count. I hope this is the start to her feeling better now.
