    DefaultOFA question

BJ started limping yesterday and of course my mind went to the dark side : so I decided to look and see if the breeder had had his mother tested yet. I can't find results for her but I decided to look at his grandparents on both sides. I realized that good results in no way guarantee that BJ will never have dysplasia. Anyway my question is in June 1995 they list results for his grandfather as GDC hips and elbows "affected" but then in July 1995 his hips are "good" and elbows "normal". I looked for term explanations and didn't find anything so I am hoping somebody here can tell me. What is GDC and how do you go from "affected" to "good" and "normal" in a month?

The GDC is the Institute for Genetic Disease Control. http://www.gdcinstitute.org They were merged with OFA http://www.offa.org/ofagdc.html

Obviously one of their vets thought they saw an abnormality whereas OFA did not. It happens. Sometimes OFA sees something no one else does. Or they think they do.

So the owners prolly submitted to GDC and then OFA right after. OFA gave the dog a passing grade and the GDC did not.

Thank you! That helps a lot. This particular dog shows up on both his mom and dad's line so I am hoping that the OFA was right.

I would not worry one bit about his grandsire's OFA/GDC ratings as it really doesn't tell you anything. Parents of a dysplastic dog can be OFA Excellent and vice versa. The only way to tell if your dog has normal hips is an x-ray.

How is he limping? Is it possible that he hurt himself somehow? (How old is he again?)

There are many many things that can cause a limp.

BJ is almost seven months old. He limps off and on, but it seems to be worst when he first gets up after lying down. But if anybody wants to play, he is his normal bouncy self. I am trying to keep him calm but it is a very uphill battle. He probably did hurt himself playing, but after going through TPLO surgery with Buster, anytime anybody limps I get concerned.

It could be Pano...it could be OCD, it could be just playing stiffness that could be it. If you are concerned...have him checked out by a vet...otherwise, strict rest him for a few days and then see how he does.

The problem could be alot of things. I wouldn't waste time researching the pedigree. Call the vet and have it looked at.
