Puff and I walk every morning in a nature preserve that's located just south and east of the VA psychiatric hospital in Topeka. Shortly after we pass a ballpark, there's a mowed area with a couple mounds planted with ornamental trees and each with a park bench recessed into the hillock in the shade of trees. There the NP's trails begin and end.
For over a year, every morning we saw someone in a sleeping bag, sleeping on a bench, bicycle propped against it.
Puff barked and barked. In time, the person rose half way up, waved, and said "my alarm clock!" in a good natured way.
My attempts to get Puff to not bark never worked so I went over, introduced ourselves, and gave him a few kibbles to give Puff.
In time, that did work and Puff stopped her barking. We got to know him a little, bit by bit.
Ron is a pensioned vet (VietNam) who was receiving outpatient services at the VA.
Last spring he said he was going to head for the Southwest and we didn't see him again.
This morning, Puff looked over at the bench about 100 feet (30 m) from our path, gave a couple barks and then ran over to the man there, tail wagging, and darting in for a few pets and then away and then in, over and over.
It was Ron and she was delighted to see him again. (Never underestimate the power of a few kibbles at the right time ;D )
Turned out he didn't go to the Southwest afterall, he went east 25 miles to Lawrence instead. I'm sure he'll fit in nicely there because it has a hippie community at the fringe of the university culture. (Ron wears a beard, shoulder length hair, American Indian ear rings and some beads, moccasins, matching clothes, etc.)
He was back in town briefly to see his doctor.
But Puff is convinced it was just to see her.

I remember you told us about Puff and the homeless man and I thought of him right away when I saw the topic. I'm glad she got to see her friend again.

That is a very nice story. Good girl Puff.
I remember when you told that story a while ago. I figured you would never see that man again, or know what happened to him. How cool that Puff recognized him, and you know where he will be staying. Thanks for sharing the story !
He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.
And now we know The Rest Of The Story!
I'm so impressed with Puff, and I bet Ron was delighted to see her too.
