Is this as bad as jogging? I know swimming is better on the joints, but how much is too much?

Swimming is not taxing on the joints (unlike jogging) but how much are we talking here? if the dog is swimming of it's own accord for the most part it's absolutely fine. But you still don't want to exhaust a dog through any means of exercise - including swimming.

well, i'm not sure distance wise, but time wise, about 10 minutes strong swimming with breaks along the shore that she can walk. i certainly don't want to exhaust her, but she is a super powerful swimmer. oh, and she has on a life jacket during these longer swims. what are the signs of exhaustion?

Zoe is at the beach for about 1-1/2 hours on weekends, holidays and days off. I would estimate her actual swim time is 45 minutes. the other 45 is wading time.

    What a lucky girl!

They need some kind of exercise, don't they. A bored lab = a destructive lab. ;D
