DefaultHow much does allergy testing normally cost?

I have been kicking around the idea of getting Billie allergy tested before I go on the long odyssey of changing her food.

She is itchy and her ears are pretty gunky especially her left one. She scratches so much it seems like her lower lip is raw. It really bothers me but I'm clueless as to what to do. I don't want to put her on Benadryl every day.

If you've had your dogs allergy tested what kind of price range am I looking at?

I took Mitzi to an allergy vet 2 years ago (NE Ohio). She did a number of tests, but here's the itemizes list:
    Conofite ear soln .............................21.00
    Ketoconazole...................................54
    Thyroid T4.......................................22
    Skin test.........................................135
    Cytology (in house) ........................23
    Ear Smear.......................................22
    Skin scrape.....................................22
    initial consultation...........................65

Mitzi tested positive only to dust mites so she's not on the monthly injections, just keto pills plus yearly blood test. If Billie tests positive to a lot on the skin test, the allergy serum is not that expensive, but it may take a long time (maybe a year) to get it adjusted to the point where it helps.

Murray's testing was $800 (payable up front) which included the first visit, the skin testing, the first vial of serum, needles, and a follow up visit. The allergy serum costs about $200 but it lasts about 6 months depending on the dose and frequency. I used CareCredit which gave me 12 months 0% interest to pay for it.

We had Sundance tested last December. I don't remember exactly how much it was, but it was less than $800. I'll check his vet records tonight and let you know.

Bodie was a lot, can't remember how much but definitely in the high hundreds. We found out that we was allergic to grasses and weeds. :

Well, I figure I'll wait and see if it dies down after the weather changes. That may tell me something too. I just can't figure it out. She's been on this food the entire time I've had her and this problem seems to only have been recent. It bothers me. Especially the scratching so hard it makes her lip raw. She scratches so hard sometimes that she hurts herself and squeals. That breaks my heart.

Have you got her on Benadryl? That might be a first-line, inexpensive thing to try if you haven't already. ?

    I think it's helped Simon.

I will give it to her if she seems inordinately itchy but I feel strange about giving it to her too often. How often do you give it to Simon? Does it help with the gunky ear?

I hoped it would help with the gunky ear, but I don't really think it has. : His turned out to be yeasty. We caved and are giving him prescription ear drops now.

But I do think it seems to have helped with the itchy/scratchies. We are giving him 50 mg, 2x a day.

Benadryl is a pretty innocuous drug, so if you wanted to try it and see if it made a difference I really don't think there'd be any harm in it. Benadryl is one of about five things I don't drag my feet about taking, so I feel like it's pretty safe! And it doesn't make him sleepy that I can tell. Sometimes I *wish* it would, but it doesn't.
