I took Sam in this morning to have a rash checked. The vet asked what he might have gotten into, and I said nothing, other than tall grass this morning while we were training. That led to training talk which led to hunting talk.
He said that he was watching a friend's lab once. The dog was a high-powered well trained hunting dog. They were in the blind, dog sitting quietly waiting for the ducks to come in. Here they came. The vet stood up and shot, missed. The dog sits down. Here come some more. Vet shoots, misses. The dog looks at him then lies down. Still paying attention, but not sitting, ready to go. More ducks come in. Vet shoots, misses. The dog gets up, looks at him again, sighs audibly, and goes and lies down under the truck!
Re: Amusing story the vet told me this morning......
Our first lab, Gunner, was very much a hunter. He actually belonged to our son who took him duck hunting regularly throughout the season. Usually it was Travis and his best friend Gabe doing the hunting, but occasionally their friend Scott would go along. Scott could not hit anything, but since he didn't get to go often, they would try to give him first go at the ducks. On on particular hunt, Travis said that everytime Scott missed, Gunner would turn and look at him. After a few times, he would sigh. Finally, he just lay down at Travis' feet. At that point Scott looked at Gunner and said, "Gunner, it looks like you wish you were out with better hunters."
