Harlee is 16 weeks and I still take her outside every time she needs to go out. I have a fenced in back yard but she is so busy and gets into everything. Just wondering when you stopped going outside with your dog? My hope is by winter she can go out alone?
She should go out alone by winter. I don't remember exactly how long. Mitzi will be 8 in December and still wants me to go out with her.
we have a fenced in yard, too. i always go outside with my dogs. they are quick to potty and come right back inside, so it's no big deal for us. if i let them out and shut the door with me standing inside, the dogs all stare back at the door and wait for someone to come out and supervise. they are even faster to take care of business during the winter months.

Pitch is 7mos old, and still needs help. If I let him go out unsupervised, he digs up the yard, or finds a stick to chew, instead of remember why he went out to begin with.
Sundance is that way, too. He'll be two years old in January, but still acts like a puppy with ADD. For "last call" of the evening, I have to take him in the backyard, leashed to prevent him from wandering around, sniffing and looking for things to play with.If I let him go out unsupervised, he digs up the yard, or finds a stick to chew, instead of remember why he went out to begin with.

Wow, I thought it was just my neurotic pup that needed an audience. Riley is almost 7 months old and needs me outside. I can't remember how Callie was when she was young, but it eventually turned out that she wouldn't poop if she knew you were outside looking at her. When she couldn't hold it anymore and we were outside, she'd turn her back to us, I guess kinda like "if I can't see you, then you can't see me :"
My dogs are 6, 5, and 3 years old and I STILL go out with them every time, even with a fenced in yard.

Throw the ball, damn it!
wow thats really interesting guys thanks!
Actually I now feel very relieved. Duke WON'T go outside unless he has an audience. I have a nice fenced in yard. But he won't go out on his own. He wants someone to come with him. Even when he doesn't have to pee. He won't go in the backyard on his own. He has to be where we are.

We too have a fenced yard and I go out with her, even in the rain.
If your puppy is getting into things, try a leash. That's what we had to to w/Zoe.
She's 4-1/2 now, so she goes out w/o a leash.
