My neighbour just had his dog to the vet for annual shots. He was told that there are unusually high instances of rabies this year. Racoons and bats seem to be getting hit the worst according to the vets, and the University. So far in Guelph, a mule and 3 dogs have contracted it. We had a racoon in our yard the other morning, thankfully, SU noticed it first and didn't let the dogs out.
So, just be safe out there!!

Eek.... I know bats are pretty bad. The chart at my vet's shows something like 52 reported incidences of rabies in bats in Ontario in 2005...Originally Posted by TangerineFizz

Baloo - 5 year old black lab
Peanut - 7 year old minpin
Monster - 3-ish year old frenchie/jack, rescue
Raccoons in the GTA have apparently been hit by an epidemic of distemper as well....
On the outskirts of Montreal they have been fighting rabies (in wild animals) pretty hard to stop it from getting to the city.
So it is all over the place

Yeesh!! Thanks for the warnings!! Will keep my eyes peeled for those rascal-y creatures!
Add tick and Lyme's to yoru list - I'm in Geiorgetown Ontario and for the first time ever this year my vet brought in the vaccine - she found two tykes on her dogs in town!
I'm a bit closer to country so I got them done - also made it easier since we took a surprise trip up north where we definitly needed the vaccine!
