    DefaultI've created a monster

When we first brought Tatum home, she was so frightened that she wouldn't take a treat from our hands at all, and would actually run in the opposite direction when approached (or cower in fear if she was attached to us). We theorized that part of her reluctance was a lack of experience in finding anything positive associated with having a human hand near her. It is difficult to train a dog using positive reinforcement if the dog does not recognize praise and doesn't want treats. We decided pretty early on that we should create an interest in food so it would be something she would want to earn. So, we started bribing her with yummy bits. At first, she would not even acknowledge that the food was there. Then, for awhile, she would lick it off our fingers if it was soft (like smashed bits of cheese or banana). We then progressed to her snatching it from us and fleeing (during which time we had to deal with a lot of hard mouth biting of the treats in our fingers). Finally, she started taking food gently after a proper sit (although she would still get up and scurry away after getting the treat).

I think today, however, we may have been too successful. I was sitting here on the couch eating a cheese sandwich with my left hand, while one miss Tatum casually sat next to the couch licking and gently munching on the fingers of my right hand! Aly distracted me for one instant, and Tatum reach across me and attempted to serendipitously remove my sandwich from my hand. Of course, this is not good manners and I did not reward her, but wow, how far she has come! I can't believe this is the same dog who once didn't know what a treat was!

If you don't know who Tatum is, or what I am talking about, a quick search should yield of her name should yield our story.

Just thought I would share. Thanks for reading.

Tatum is a true success story, but I bet your friends and relatives notice a bigger difference in her than you think. Sometimes I think my Duke still has problems after over three years, but my friends and relatives who have known him always remark about how far he has come. It's not easy to see the small day to day progress that adds up.
