As most of you know Axl has severe hip dysplasia and he is not even two. When we got him neutered the vet took xrays because he didn't like the look of his walk. She was almost in tears then telling me how bad he was. Well me son took him to another vet today for a second opinion and he told Nick that Axl's hips are so bad that he wouldn't recommend surgery, he has arthritis extrememly bad in his knees and he has two blown Something..maybe acl? He said if it was him he would not invest any money into surgery because he really doesn't think it would hold............He also told Nick that he is deteriorating so fast we would probably only have him til Winter before we would have to put him down. I am so sick to my stomach from this news. We got axl from a shelter and just love this guy. Financially we are strapped with two kids in college and two more coming up and I just opened a business. Please keep Axl in your prayers, he is by far the sweetest guy I have ever had.
I'm so sorry. I was wondering if some physical therapy would help. Scout had physical therapy after surgery on her knees and then they showed me so I could continue it myself at home - what to do, what not to do, and what to watch for - signs of problems. Even without surgery, maybe these exercises would help?
Just wondering if you had a consult with an othro vet. Again, even if you're not going to do surgery, to get their opinion on how bad it is and a prognosis. They see the bad cases.
Just some thoughts, and again, so sorry. I've got 2 at university too, I understand. I hope Axl has lots carefree days this summer.
So sorry to hear this. Poor baby. Was the second opinion an ortho vet? How is Axl coping with it? I came across this website where people write in about their dog's ortho problems etc. I think there is also one for "conservative management." Maybe you have already checked them out. ??
