I let the girls out before I was leaving for work & Abby takes off after a rabbit. > I have never seen a dog move so fast as she does. She has killed 2 rabbits in the past several weeks. They make it to the fence but if they are not near the gates they can't get out.
Thank goodness for the "come in" command, but I think it was too late, she came back up licking her chops. Now I have to tell SU to go get it when he gets home before me. I know she will go to the back area & find it. I think she shakes them around & their little necks break. :'(
Does anyone else's labs kill rabbits? Geez....I thought she was a duck dog!!! :
Lucy isn't a rabbit killer, but she takes after cats the way you describe..I don't trust Lucy around kitties.
The only thing Timber does that with is Lizards, and fortunetly they run up the wall.
Mine might give chase but if they ever actually caught up with it (be it rabbit, cat, squirrel, bird) they stand back and look puzzled or bark for me to come over and help them.
Sadie had a rat in her mouth one time :-X
Buddy chases the rabbit in our field, but has never caught one. They have plenty of room to get away.

Ginger was my hunter. She would get several rabbits each year, but groundhogs were her specialty! Jake doesn't bother with anything. Jazzy tries, but hasn't caught anything yet.
Shadow got a mole once, she followed it's path and dug it up. :P We made her drop it and leave it, and stopped her when she tried to go after another one. She would chase bunnies but was never fast enough to catch one. Buddy, on the other hand, is a speed demon and I am sure he could catch one if he was ever loose.

Ellie's personal favorite are possums. There is nothing yuckier than going outside and seeing a full grown possum hanging out of your lab's mouth. Thankfully, like the proper retriever she is, she doesn't kill them. She soft mouths them and runs around the yard with them. "Drop It" just doesn't seem to work for these occasions.
She also catches rats, lizards and flies. The lizards and flies don't fare quite as well as the rats and possums. :
Molly never would really chase the rabbits. She would run a bit & they would be gone.
SU did find the rabbit by the corner of the fence. There was not a mark on it, so it either had a heart attack : or she shook it & it's neck broke. Thankfully she doesn't eat them. I think if it had run under the gate it would have been gone. She cornered it & poor thing had no where to go. :'(
These labs are always doing something to keep us on our toes.
