DefaultI have a question about the leptosperosis vaccation

UCLA Medical Center requires the vaccination when you go into their Pet Therapy program. Was just wondering if I should be concerned? Anyone's dog ever have one?

My dogs get it, but Lepto is in my area of Michigan. Fortunately, they do not seem to react to vaccines

My dogs get it since they are working retrievers and are often out in the woods and around ponds and lakes.

Mine get it because they'll eat anything, anywhere - the more foul, the better. Never have had any problems.

This is why I love this place! Thanks for the replies, I'm feeling much better about it. Since it isn't given normally where I live the vets have to order it in advance. Hopefully I will go for our orientation at the end of March and shortly after that I will need to get Moose's physical and shots in order.

Raven got the vaccine at her 2 year checkup last year. I guess it is the norm around here. But that night her face got really swollen and itchy because she had an allergic reaction to it. Not a huge deal, the vet said give benadryl and by the next evening she was back to normal. Very scary at the time, so have some benadryl on hand in case. I have heard this is common with that vaccine.

Jake had his and no problems. Jazzy however had a terrible reaction. Her entire face and ears swelled up. I had to take her back to the vet and they gave her a shot and meds. They told me never to let her have the Lepto shot again.

They give the vaccination in our area too. Kody gets it with no problems.

One thing to remember though, the vaccination is only good for approximately 10 strains of the bacteria. There are roughly 30 strains of which only 20 can be identified. This info is from our very knowledgeable emergency vet hospital. Kody was diagnosed with an unidentified strain of lepto a year ago November. We were told that the vaccine covers the most common strains only. Just a warning for everyone. Kody ended up in renal failure and came very close to leaving us. Ever since that I try not to let him ingest anything outside, especially standing water and I thank God that he is still with us everyday.
