I called the vet today to cancel Abby's spaying & right away they said "The doctor would not do her now so don't worry." I will call them 4 weeks after her heat cycle is over & she will be done then. So Abby will wear her panties for another week & then we will watch her for another week & then just wait.
The vet said it is too risky & there is no medical reason to spay her tomorrow anyway.
This is all new to us since our girls are usually spayed at 6 months.
I sure missed something! Is Abby ill?

No Nance. Abby was to be spayed tomorrow but we noticed some blood on the bathroom floor Sat. afternoon. Our girls are usually spayed at 6 months but our breeder said since Abby is a smaller lab & her girls mature later she thought we should wait till she was a year old. None of her girls went into heat before 15-16 months. Well Miss Abby decided to be different. It is riskier to spay when a dog is in heat unless there is a medical reason to do it.
Abby is healthy....we will just wait for awhile after her heat to have her spayed.
We went out & got her panties & pads so there wouldn't be spots around.
Ah! Thanks for the explanation, Georgie.

You might get a better responce from some other's but i was told that even 4 wk's was a little to soon. Takes quiet awhile for them to get "back to normal" after finishing there heat cycle- my vet wanted to wait at least 8 wk.s and preferred 12. or mid cycle- that is if they are on 6 month cycle - So Sammi was done at 12 wk's out and this work well. Good luck with the diaper's and all- my Sammi seemed very depressed with it all- here is a pic. she was mortified!

dipete - The vet said 4-6 or later. I probably will wait a couple months too. Sammi looks like Abby. Abby has left her pants on but she is mortified also. This is Abby's first heat & she was just a year this past Jan. 15th.
Did you count from the end of the heat cycle? I was counting from two more weeks & then start to count. I think that is sright.
Somebody please correct me. This is my first time with this. :
