We lost our four and a half year old Lab Abby this week to Lymes Disease. This was a very special dog to our family and the grief has been difficult.
We want to get a puppy and I have great concerns that we get a healthy one. Some of the genetic issues really scare me. What exactly do I look for in a breeder to lessen the chances of getting a dog with potential problems? I have read several advertisements and one in particular discussed the tested hips of the bitch and stated the results were FAIR. Is this something to avoid?
Does anyone know of a reputable breeder within 300 miles of Eastern Iowa that might have a yellow female puppy or young dog? I would be very greatfull of any help.
Welcome and sorry for your loss.
Here's a good checklist to read through when looking at buying a pup....http://woodhavenlabs.com/checklist.html
FAIR is still passing...and should not disuade you from purchasing.
As far as for finding a reputable breeder you can search here:
The pretty decent breeders *usually* don't advertise in the typical fashion. Many have waiting lists and don't breed but one or two litters a year. You should do your homework, check with a local lab club and be patient. Good luck!
