    DefaultThree legged puppy...need advice?

This is the puppy of our favorite cousin, Valerie and her hubby Gerry. You may remember, they are the ones who had us over for dinner when we were in Chattanooga competing.

You may also remember the story of their three-legged puppy. If not, to recap: This is a puppy that was part of an Oops litter, born to Gerry's son's Lab. No idea who the father is, but they all look exactly like little Labs.

Anyway, V and G felt very sorry for Rudy, who was born with only one front leg. Knowing he would have little chance of finding a home, they agreed to adopt him early on.

Rudy is a typical little Lab puppy. Just cute as he can be, very playful and very, very loving. We spent some time with him in Chattanooga and fell in love. He has even graduated from PetsMart puppy class. We got a picture of him with his diploma. He was wearing a plastic cowboy hat. :P

I noticed when I was down there that Rudy's front leg seems to have developed at an odd angle. Or perhaps he's just not compensating for the other leg properly. At any rate, it seems that his leg has started to stick straight out from his body at the shoulder.

V and G mentioned this to us yesterday, as our BIL had gone over and seen it and blown the whistle as it seeming like something was seriously wrong. They are taking him to the vet this week, and are afraid that the vet is going to recommend putting him to sleep. :'(

I need to give them some advice, but thought I'd come and pick your brains first. My first inclination was to tell them that it's possible the leg could be braced and he could learn to use it *under* his body, instead of out to the side.

V also wondered, if they did some kind of surgery on the leg, how they could recuperate him, as he only has the one front leg. I'm thinking some sort of sling?

I asked her to send me some pictures, and I will remind her today.

Does anyone have any advice for them? I'm thinking just the average vet may not be the person to ask about this. He might need to see an orthopedic specialist. I'm sure University of Tennessee would have one. Any other thoughts?

TIA. I would really like to advise them well and see Rudy get some help.

I don't have any actual experience so these are just my thoughts but here it goes.
I would think taking him to an ortho vet would be more productive than a regular vet. Could it be something like what Chance has (Dani's rescue) and be growing deformed for the constant misuse. In his case they are bracing them to he his leg stay under him. It would be more difficult not having another leg to brace it too but maybe they could find a way. Is there a rehab facility near you they could probably give you some good advice too.

Good luck to all of them. Bless them for taking him on and doing their best with him.

You need to check this website:

    http://www.rollingdogranch.org

Great place and wonderful resource for disabled pets. Lots of extremely happy tripods, blind, deaf and disabled dogs live here -- excellent example of how disabled pets can and do live wonderfully happy lives.

Steve and Alayne can be contacted with questions...please do so before making any rash decisions.

Barbara, I actually thought of Chance too. I think I'm going to send them that link.

I also saw that rollingdogranch in this month's BARK. I should send them that link as well.

Dear little man. I hope an ortho vet can help him out.

Bark Magazine did a whole storey on 3 legged pets. Great article. It may still be on the website.

Since he's growing, he probably is compensating unappropriately. You have some of the best ortho surgeons (and PT) facilities at the U of Tennessee. I'd have him seen by a specialist.
He might not need surgery but just some PT and - possibly - a brace.

I most certainly would not let a regular vet mess with him. And I'd probably not opt for surgery as my first option, unless other things don't work and his use of the leg causes problems.
