I am new to JL and have a concern about our 5yr old Chocolate Lab. Yesterday around 8am he began to hack and gag, then he threw up. This continued for a few hours and then began to subside, but not gone entirely. The times the gagging happened were becoming more spread out, but did notice that it got triggered when he would get up and walk. later in the evening he was able to walk without triggering it but the gagging and hacking would come every so often along with a little saliva or very little throw up.
Vet said to watch him and if it started to go away to not feed him till morning (today) and only a bland diet. Well overnight he did the hacking thing only twice and ate a little of the bland food (only gave him little as instructed by Vet). When he gags or hacks its like he is trying to throw up or something. Has anyone seen this before with their dog? Does anyone know what it is? Any suggestions or information would be greatly appreciated..
Is it possible he could have kennel cough? Has he been around other dogs? When Skippy had kennel cough, I first thought that he had something stuck in his thoat because he kept gagging and sounding like he was trying to bring something up.
My dog was doing the exact same thing a few months ago and I am pretty sure it was Kennel cough. He had been playing with a dog that I had heard made a weird noise and then the next day Cooper sounded like a seal. He also would do it more with movement so we cut out walks for a few days and kept him quiet. It did eventually go away, but I made sure to keep him away from other dogs for about two weeks. Everything is fine now, but it was scary at the time. Good luck.
I would ring your vet back & insist on an appointment. If he still continues to not take it seriously, I would be looking for another vet. I can't imagine me ringing my vet with a problem like that & not be told to get them in ASAP.
Good luck & please keep us posted.
Thank you all for responding!
We actually did board him with other dogs when we went to Springfield. It was an "open" boarding place, no kennels and we did get the Bordatella shot before we left, he is all caught up with his shots. This started yesterday and the last day he was at the boarding place was on Saturday, April 17th. can Kennel Cough still happen after that much time?
I do agree with the comments of our Vet, I will be having a serious talk with her tomorrow and see just why she thought it was not necessary to bring him in right away, even if she was booked for the day. Thanks again all!!
I think it can still show up after that much time, just like with humans and colds, it can take a week or two before you start exhibiting symptoms after catching it.
If your vet suspected kennel cough I don't blame her for not thinking an appointment is necessary. KC pretty much just needs to run it's course (like Joey stated above, limited exercise and total avoidance of other dogs for at least a few weeks is the only real "treatment").
Hope he feels better soon!
Baloo - 5 year old black lab
Peanut - 7 year old minpin
Monster - 3-ish year old frenchie/jack, rescue
definitely sounds like kennel cough.
Sounds like kennel cough to me.
