DefaultWhen it "clicks" and they get it!

When Tucker goes swimming, what I usually do is have him sit on my left side, tell him to stay, throw the bumper or bird while yelling "YOWWW"; I have him wait a bit, then send him by throwing my arm in the direction of the bumper while yellin' "Tucker!"...and he takes off into the water.

He hasn't stayed completely on his own.* I have to have one finger touching the D ring on his collar.* Not holding him (no pressure), but just touching, as a reminder to wait.

But today, when he came out of the water with the bumper, he went about 4 ft. away from me, dropped it and shook off (which is what he usually does).* I took the bumper and figured I'd just throw it and he could jump in for it, without doing all the other.* But I said sit...and he did.* I said stay....and he did.* I threw it....he stayed sitting.* I threw my arm and yelled "Tucker!", and away he went!* When he came back, we did the same thing again....both times he was about 4 feet away from me when he sat and waited for me to send him out.* I was so excited!* I was yellin', callin' him a GOOD BOY GOOD BOY the whole time he swam out to the bumper.* *;D

He may never do it again completely on his own....we'll see....but it clicked today!* I loved that!*

By George I think he's got it.

It's amazing when that light bulb goes off in their head isn't it.

    Good boy Tucker.

That's terrific and I think a very hard skill, too. I tried it w/ Sami but just never followed through with much (okay, hardly any) consistency. So count me as impressed! ;D

Good boy! Next lab fest, I will get Mitzi to watch Tucker. She sure could learn a few things. Mitzi gets so excited, she jumps in before I even throw it. And how did you teach him to shake 4 feet away? Mine have to shake right next to me, and they even rub against me to dry off.

Great job with Tucker.. I am impressed with water shake 4 feet away! I am usually soaked to the skin(my fault need to work that out). Sometimes mine will stay and wait for the release command, but rarely early in the session. Good for you!
