DefaultBeen giving this a lot of thought; we are going to retire Zoe from therapy work

well, at least for a while.......even though she has been perkier since her surgery, we have noticed her patience with other animals is not what it used to be........she is still a love around dogs she has known for a long time, but younger friskier ones put her a little bit on edge......we have a lovely English sheep dog ) a year and half) in our therapy group who tried to jump on her the last time ( in July) we went and Zoe let her know that was unacceptable........maybe it is middle age or most likely she still needs to recover from her surgery....I know it took me a long time ( like a year) to get my energy level back after my surgery....she is still a love with the veterans, maybe I can get her over there by herself sometimes and not with the group........

I am thinking of taking Zeb.........I know , sounds crazy....but he is settling down so much and he gets along with everyone and everything........I might give it a try later this fall and see how he does....... will let you know how he does.....

I think it's a great idea to take Zoe to see the veterans still. It sounds like they have a great bond with each other. I'm sure Zeb will do just fine (maybe afer a couple mishaps at first, though .

thanks, Tatyana...I think Zeb will do okay.. he has calmed down a great deal....of course, he still has those Mess Pot moments...when Zoe snapped at the other dog who she has known for a year I knew she was still tired......it just seems that she deserves the time she needs to get her energy back.......but I do think if we are by ourselves she would be okay with the veterans....she loves them so and they love her...

It is so hard for our dogs to tell us when they aren't up to the tasks we ask them to do. They enjoy working for us and will continue to do so as long as they physically can.

I pulled Kona out of therapy for children ........... after 2 years I realized he wasn't fully comfortable with the kids .......... he loved the teachers!!

I know you'll do what is right for both of your babies.

It sounds like taking Zoe only to the veterans is the way to go for now. I can't wait to hear Zeb's therapy dog stories. I'm sure they'll be priceless!

However hard it was to make the desicion it sounds like a good one. It's nto forever, and Zeb sounds like he'll be a fun therapy dog. Not the same as Zoe, and with his own style

Sounds like her place is with the vets for the time being. When you do therapy work do you always go with a group of dogs?

Aww. Well, it sounds like it might be the right thing, even just for a while. You're awesome with her, and to anticipate what she needs right now. It will all work out! Maybe a new career for Zeb in the interim, to see how it goes! ;D

putertutor, we go into the Post Traumatic Stress Ward of our local VA Hopsital.....it is a locked ward so the volunteer director escorts us around....we have been with the same group of adults and animals for the past 4 1/2 years......actually when we started one of the ladies had a marvelous English sheep dog, Sassy Cassy.......two years ago Cassy passed away.....a year ago the lady returned with Daisy Damn It......a darling sweet English Sheep dog who possesses a great personality.........I think Zoe is just plain old wore out from this surgery........but I am going to ask the volunteer coordinator if we can just show up by ourselves sometimes and go with her to visit for short periods of time.......meanwhile I think I will see how Zeb does with the group......actually he and Daisy are two of a kind.....I think they will hit it off.....

I think it's so awesome that you do therapy work. I've had to be hospitalized a lot and it's depressing, boring, and just awful. When you're first hospitalized people visit a lot, but the longer the stay the more lonely patients become. My mom had to be in convelesant care for a year after a stroke left her unable to walk and even tho I would visit her several times per day she was so lonely. When the animals would come to visit the hospital it would always bring a smile to her face, she just loved it. I think you're pretty special for doing this kind of work.

When Lexie gets older and settles some I want to do therapy work with her. Meanwhile we will work on mastering the CGC skills, socialization, and trick training.
