I bought Coren's "The Intelligence of Dogs" and was very disappointed.* I'll never buy anything written by him again. It had a lot of padding, discussions of concepts that have no empirical scientific foundation, etc.* Coren has a PhD in psychology but I think it's social psych -- nothing to do with the animal world or animal studies.* What expertise he does have is from being a longtime member of the Vancouver (BC) Dog Obedience Club and a judge at dog shows.

I don't doubt that the book will have some worthwhile or valid points in it.* But I much prefer someone like Dr. Patricia McConnell whose PhD IS in animal behavior and who is a behaviorist.

How to Speak Dog was one of the best books I've read on dog behavior. I posted this earlier this week, but because of things I read in that book I was able to save a friends dog's life this week.

I enjoyed it a lot too! It's been a while since I've read it, but I liked it so much I bought a copy to read again one day. It had some really fascinating trivia and observations.

I've got both books but I haven't read them yet. Stanley Coren also has a TV show. I'm just about to start The Other End of the Leash (Patricia McConnell). Marley and Me is a great read. Prepare to laugh and cry.
