Shadow has a habit once ina while
of eating grass in the backyard
and then throwing it up
once she pukes - she's usally all good
well this morning - she ate grass & has thrown up a couple of times
it was mainly lots of clear spit/liquid & grass mixed in
so now she still seems to want to throw up
she's licking an area carpet furiously down here by my office
as if she's trying to get the hair off
then just a few mins ago she was biting the hair off her paws & tail
she has seemed to calm down a bit
but still doing the gagging thing
this has been going on & off for about 2 hrs..
I'm hoping it just takes its course
I'm making sure she doesn't drink too much water
is there anything I can do for her?
oh -- otherwise she seems fine
Did she get into anything? I think if it's been going on for over 2 hours I would call the vet. I would be worried about poisoning.
she could have eaten virtually any type of plant in the back of my property
she has free roam of the woods
since I posted - she threw up again
this time it had a huge ball of hair about 3" around
I found paper shreds - like from a office paper shredder
we've been unpacking boxes
and more grass/leaves
She stopped the furious licking & gagging and is now laying down sideways like she's exhausted
I'm working down in my office
so she'll be next to me and I'll be able to keep an eye on her
Sounds like she was trying to get that last bit up. Hopefully, she'll rest and that will be the end of it.
Hope that shadow is feeling better. I read an interesting article about dogs eating grass. It stated that they simply enjoy the taste of grass. The reason they throw it up is that it "tickles" their tummies and they end up getting sick. Dogs actually have very sensitive stomachs and a slight irritation like grass can make them sick or gag.
My girls are like cows & have to eat grass alot. If they eat some "grass paddies" that are left after SU cuts the grass I know one of them will throw up. :
I hope Shadow is feeling better now.
she's doing much better
Shadow finally got up a good amount of grass and hair..
then once she calmed down from that - she was all good
exhausted & layed down for a while.
It was weird -- I never saw her try to eat her own hair
to make herself throw up
she must have grazed in the backyard a little too much this morning
she doesn't do it often but when she does
she usualy throws up once & she's all good
today - the gagging & furious licking lasted a little over 2 hrs
we just mowed the lawn 2 days ago -- so maybe she got a hold of one of those "grass paddies" this morning
thanks everyone! ;D
Glad to hear Shadow is better ;D
Buck likes to go after those "grass paddies" as well. Other than that he has cooled off with the grazing. Occassionally I catch him just nibbling off the top of the long grass blades. That's his way of letting me know it's time to mow the lawn

glad she is better!
taylor does the same thing with eating grass. if she doesn't chew them well enough before swalling, it comes back up. :-X

It think it is important to notice how they are eating the grass. If they are just taking the tips off of individual blades this is normal, its sweet, tastes good and has alot of minerals in it. If they are chewing big clumps of it this might be something to worry about. Oona did this when she was a puppy and she had a parasite, and a friend of mine's Irish Terrier was doing this and had worms.
