I'm having the disagreement with my inlaws so I wanted to see what others thought.
Do you leave water for your dogs when your gone for several hours?
Mocha was crate trained but has had free run of the house for about 8 months now so she has water available to her but I know she can hold her bladder for a LONG time and will not mess in the house unless she's sick. Our Yorkie on the other hand cannot he has no problem messing in the house if someone is not there when he wants to go. We normally leave him baby gated in the restroom during the day with his bed and toys but no water since he's not crate trained.
Definitly. When we are gone the boys have the run of the kitchen with a doggy door leading to the back yard, so we don't have to worry about them having accidents. But we do have to worry about coming home to water all over the flooring.
Most definitely. Our water dishes are elevated so they can't play in the water. I'd rather clean up an accident then deprive my dogs of water and end up with worse problems.

Both Maggie and Dakota are crated when we are gone. Copper has run of the house and can get water if she wishes. Sometimes Kaden will shut the bathroom door and she cant get in there. My friend wont leave water down for her dog if shes gone either because she plays in it and messes in the house...
My guys have water available to them 24/7 no matter what. I remember one day I went to work and forgot to refill their water and felt terrible when I got home because it was dry. They prolly don't drink much when I'm not here, but it's there if they want it.
There's always a bowl filled in the kitchen and one on the deck for when we're outside (which is 99% of the time when we're home). Tucker has access to the water all day. Frankie is crated during the day and only gets some at lunchtime when the dog walker comes.
*reminds self to buy elevated dog dish so Frankie stops playing in it*

Re: elevating bowls..
when sherri's brother was staying here in June
his one dog would always knock the bowls over
so I took a large plastic bowl & put it on top of a home depot bucket
the plastic bowl fit perfect and he couldn't get his paws in the bowl to knock it over
Zoe has access to water all day while we're gone, but she doesn't drink until we get home. Her bowls are always the way I left them.
She drinks about 3 times in the a.m. before I go to work, and that's about it.
On weekends, she'll drink lots because we go to the beach, but stops at about 9:30 a.m. or so.

Yup we leave water when we're gone, but Abby doesn't usually drink it Molly is crated most of the time so no water for her in the crate...I bet it wouldn't hurt to put a little in though *is thinking now*

Wesley is uncrated througout the day and has access to water.
