    DefaultWater Bowl Experiment: Conclusion

Today our research scientist was on our floor. She does lots of animal studies and raises therapy dogs and rabbits. I described my water bowl "experiment" to her. "Oh yes. It is called 'placement preference' and I've done some studies on that with my horses." Cool! The left vs right watering experiment actually had a name.

I called DH and told him. He thought that was pretty neat too, but decided he'd take the "placement preference" theory a step further. He removed both bowls from their regular place, filled the new white one with fresh water, set it down across the room by the doggie door.

A bit later, in came Seamus for a drink. Hmmm. No bowl, guess I'll go outside, which he did passing right by the water bowl without pausing for a drink. Next came Rusty... same thing. Then Flynn... same thing only Flynn did pause long enough to look at the water before passing through the doggie door. When they all came back in, separately, each looked at the bowl and went directly to the old watering place. Not finding any joy there they proceeded to the family room whereupon they flung themselves to the floor and resumed snoozing.

DH then replaced the bowls to the preferred positions. Seamus heard him, went and drank... from the left side bowl.

    Experiment concluded.

Now THAT is interesting......did she say why they have a placement preference? Maybe sort of like people who can only sleep on "their" side of the bed?

I love how, when 'denied' access (in their eyes) to water, the preferred solution was a nap. Now THAT's my kind of scientific research! ;D

Ahh! This was a great experiment, Nance! It is so funny how they went and flopped down when their water was not in the usual place. Silly puppers!

Frances - in short, it simply has to do with habituation. It wouldn't matter what vessel the water was placed in, as long as it is placed nearest the door to the family room. The preference, of course, could be changed over time but if the option for the original bowl placement remains so does the preference.

That is just really cool 8)

I not only got a new bowl for the deck, but moved it at the same time It took the boys about 2 or 3 days before they would drink out of the new bowl in the new spot!

    Wow, that is really interesting!!

I was so exicted to see that this experiment had a conclusion at last!

We have found that if we move Molly's feeding bowl she hesitates before going to it even if we encourage her to go to it while Barney dives straight in...he doesn't care.
Having said that though neither of them will eat out of each others bowl when you put food in but they will check each others for left overs!
