For those who read my "he wouldn't even sit" in his Basic II class Monday night........things went MUCH better yesterday. I'm feeling better and I'm sure that had a lot to do with it.......
I thought I would take him to the high school parking lot to practice being off leash and coming and maybe heeling etc. I thought it would be a big empty space. It was mostly, but it was a mistake to go there because there began to be constant cars coming through. When I got there tho, there weren't any. I realized later that they were coming to band practice, but by that time we were already out, and he was off leash, and we were a fair distance away from my car. I had the leash with me tho, in case I needed it. He did REALLY well. We heeled some and he stayed by me with no leash. And we practiced come and he came immediately, even once when I called him away from a fence where two dogs were barking at him! He sat calmly by my side when I asked him to. Lots of distractions, and a new place for him. He'd never been there before.
We then went to a field by a church and did the same. Off leash, explore some, heel some, come some. And he walked nicely from the door of my house and hopped right into his cage in the back of the car, off leash. This morning after our walk, I took the leash off about 40 yards from our house, and he heeled by me (mostly) to our front yard. I released him, Anne's cat was in the front yard, and Sam had to "run" him up to the front porch. Of course he didn't hurt him, but I don't think Sweet Kitty likes to be run!
I was so pleased and heartened. We really are making progress, I just lose sight of it sometime. It's been almost a year since I got him. And as far as I know the only formal command he knew then was sit. so YAYYYYY for Sam! What a good dog!!!!!!!!!
Yay Sam! Glad to hear you are in better spirits.
See...you can do well, Sam I Am,
Now you may have cherry jam! :P
Good boy! And good you...you've done a lot with him
And I love the Sam I Am couplets. He probably WOULD like cherry jam...he likes sweet things.
Glad you like 'em (was afraid you may roll her eyes : )
Tucker'd love sweet things too, if he were allowed.....what am I saying...Tucker would eat most anything if allowed!
Taking Sam to a big parking lot like that....good idea....I'd have never thought of that one. He really does do well, from the sounds of it....that's so great, isn't it?
....and I guess you can tell I like Dr. Seuss (you probably do too)
YAY SAM!!!! ;D You should be very proud of yourself (both of you!)!
"Each is a creature of Earth and is entitled to reside on it with dignity"
Wow! BIG kudos to you for practicing in different locations. This is something I have been so, so lazy about. : It will really serve you well!
Sounds like you two are doing great! I'm sure your feeling better did have something to do with it. Glad today was a better day!
