DefaultHooo boy, have I got a story for you...

I could literally hardly wait to get back and tell you guys about this...

We went to Knoxville to Kevin's family's annual picnic yesterday.

Kevin's cousin (one I dearly love and think is hilarious) came up to us and said, "Well, I almost brought you guys a gift today. Actually, I almost brought you TWO gifts today."

    ???

She proceeded to explain that her husband's son had asked them to watch their two female Labs while he was on vacation with his family. He called them and told them where the food was, how much to feed them, and at the end of the conversation he said, "Oh, and also, I think they might be pregnant."

Three days later, while they were away on vacation, BOTH females delivered litters of TEN puppies each.

Two did not make it for various reasons. They now have EIGHTEEN puppies that need homes.

Oh boy. The son was there, and he's a really funny, really nice young guy with a young family. I was trying really, really hard to be a good sport about this, but you KNOW what I'm thinking. : So he starts telling us that he hopes to be rid of them all by next weekend, at six weeks.

I am sitting there thinking, "Don't say it. You'll look like a crazy dog lady. Just drink your Sprite and keep your mouth shut." Kevin, bless his heart, chimes in with a mini-sermon about puppies who leave their mom and littermates too early. Lord knows we are experts on this. I don't think his sermonette had a tremendous effect, but he did try.

Then the son started telling a gruesome story (I will spare you the details) about how the mother had killed two of the puppies. I made it part of the way through the first story and excused myself for the rest, only to return and have him start over so I could hear the whole thing. :-\

Another oddity is that they have one puppy who was born with only three legs. He is missing one of the front (don't remember which). Poor little guy! I am so relieved to know that Kevin's cousin is championing this little one and they are going to keep him if he is not adopted.

Anyway. WHEW! I sure hope they are planning to get those girls spayed after this!

OMG!!! Connie, I can imagine how hard it was for you not to say something. I hope they will spay their dogs and do the best for the three-legged puppy.

I just remembered that this month's BARK magazine has a feature on three-legged dogs! I am going to send it to them!

    Yikes works.

They are really perfectly nice people. They just aren't thinking big picture. :-\ I hate it for the pupppies. Who knows what percentage of them will end up in happy, stable homes.

Boy, you were brave to stay quite. No matter how nice people they are I would at least give them a long sermon; some people learn something if you really insist, at least that is what I hope. Bear hasnt been spayed yet, but I have been very, very careful every time she is in heat.

I'm always fearful of where those puppies woull end up. Bear was from a backyard breeder as we didnt know anything about dogs, but I'm glad we got her instead of somebody that would just recklessly breed her.
