DefaultA Little Update on Zoe and Her Aggression Toward...

the rottie mix at the beach.

Well, for those of you who are not familiar:
Zoe, my non-aggressive, minds her own business at the beach; does not play or give stranger dogs the time of day, decides to rush a rottie mix at the beach and snarl with hackles up. :-\ I was aghast at this behavior!!

She did this the first 2 times she saw U'ula. U'ula's owner laughed it off, and was wondering what brought on that behavior. We were both puzzled. This dog is the sweetest dog ever (rottie mix, who by the way, is a rottie/lab). Her mom rejected her, she was the runt, and owner brought her home at 4 weeks. She is now 100 pounds.
    But I digress...

The 3rd time, Zoe swam and ran up (we were in the water about 50 yards out!). I yelled, "ZOE!! Friendly!!" while I raced toward the shore. She sniffed U'ula and that's when the owner asked if Zoe could have a treat. He gave a treat to U'ula FIRST, and Zoe SECOND.

So this week, we've been seeing U'ula every day, and Zoe goes up and actually wags her tail and does her niff-ing. Owner and I walk along the beach together while.... get this! U'ula and Zoe are in the front of us walking side by side!!!

Kinda' reminded me of the scene from Shrek when Shrek & the Princess were walking with their balloons in the field. LOL

I don't think we have to worry about Zoe's aggression any longer. : )

Nice that U'ula's owner understood! A situation like that could have been very unpleasant otherwise.
Very happy that it turned out so well. Good girl, Zoe!

I wonder if it had anything to do with the treats, and the fact that U'ula got her treat first, showing Zoe that she was "below" U'ula?

Glad it worked out with U'ula.* I can picture the gang walking on the beach together.

Just keep an eye on the situation. Since you really don't know what started the problem, it may return for no reason.

That's awesome!! Zoe is such a sweet girl.

You know, something about this made me go hmmmm:

Her mom rejected her, she was the runt, and owner brought her home at 4 weeks.
There is some kind of connection, but I'm not sure what.

As you know, Angus gets growled at on a fairly regular basis. He was one of the smallest of his litter. I wonder if they can sense a runt that was rejected? You know, have you ever heard, "they" say that when the mother rejects them there is some kind of reason? Could there be any truth to that? (Please don't tell the Rotti's owner that it made me think this!)

Or could it be that she was so young and separated from her mother at such a young age (almost the exact same age as Angus) that she missed some kind of important socialization skill that is undetectable to us, but is like a huge neon sign flashing above their heads to other dogs?

It just made me wonder. Coincidental that she and Angus have similar histories. Does this happen to the Rotti as often as it does Angus? ???

Interesting, Connie... But U'ula is so friendly, I actually thought it was Zoe who was provoking something. There's even a little chihuahua dog that walks on the beach, and U'ula meets and greets.

I'll continue to observe and be optimistically cautious.

Oh, who knows? I thought it was kinda curious, but could be nothing. Probably is a good idea to watch and see. I never get tired of watching dogs interact. Just fascinating. I wish I could read their thoughts.

We need to see some pictures of U'ula! I love me some Rottis! I'll bet a Rottweiler/Lab mix would be a very good-looking dog!
