sooo.. we went swimming with the dogs today at the lake
we go home, fed the dogs
and after we got changed sherri & I went back out
before we left - we had shayna & shadow in the back yard & didn't notice anything odd about shadow - she was running & walking fine
when we got home - we noticed right away she was favoring her left leg
holding it up while she walked - barely touching the ground
and she's my crazy child where nothing phases her
I carried her downstairs to the office
sherri noticed the area above her leg
in the shoulder area seems a bit swollen
I gave shadow a doggie asprin
and we just iced her shoulder
I'll rest her as much as possible tmwr
more ice & more asprin -- hopefully it will ease up.
we checked her paws to make sure nothing is in the pads
she doesn't flinch when we touch the leg
she seems to welcome us massaging the area
does anyone know how often & how long I can ice her?
we kept it on for about 7 mins about a half an hr ago.
update wed morning
hmmm - now I'm not sure whats happening.
I was out in the yard just a little while ago
and noticed bumps on shadows belly when she rolled over
this is the right inner rear leg area
front right leg - armpit area. a bit blurry but its red bumps
sherri called the vet & we have an appt at 1;30 today
UPDATE #2 today
we're back from the vets
and hives is what she has on her belly
vet said its a reaction from something
what that something is --- the vet can't be sure
we can probably rule out a scorpion sting
cause more than likely she would be licking the sting..
so our guess is as good as the vets.. a spider bite, fire ants an allergic reastion to plants outside --- no idea
the vet gave her a shot of benadryl and about a 1/2 a bottle of capsules to give by mouth if needed
as far as the leg - all we can do is watch that
if it doesn't imrpove we can bring her in for further testing
vet said she doesn't think the leg is connected to the allergic reaction but she can't be sure - its possible.
the leg seems to be improving today - still tender but better than last night & this morning - they gave us deramaxx for that - if needed.
shadow also has a staph infection - doc said its been there for a little while
she said its not contagious & I was under the impression it was??
does anyone have any experience with staph infections on the dogs?
shadow is resting right now..
I'm off to finish mowing the lawn
cya's all later ;D
Poor thing! The icing protocol for humans is 10-15 minutes on and an equal amount of time off. I don't know if it would be the same in dogs. Maybe do five minutes on, five minutes off, just to be safe?
I'm about to go to sleep -
so I'll ice her again for about 5 mins

we let shadow sleep on our bed last night.
so when I got up just a little while ago
sherri asked that I lift her off the bed instead of jumping down
she's still limping - but not walking with the leg in the air the whole time
so she's putting a tiny bit of weight on it
she went out in the yard & did ok
she touched the ground with her paw more than she lifted it
but she just stood in the middle of the yard
instead of running in the woods & checking the wood pile for critters
I already gave her a doggie asprin
sherri is going to ice her in a few mins
I plan to work in the office most of the day so she will stay resting next to me while I work.
We plan to give her at least a full days rest
if we don't see improvement we'll take her to the vet
