    Defaultadventures of jackson and bear

we went on a great hike this weekend along a river that led up to a waterfall.* the dogs had a blast and couldn't stay out of the water!* bear wore his big ruffwear pack and jackson wore bear's tiny old ruffwear pack.* they were trying to fish for crawfish in the river - it was hilarious!!* they would dig and dig, and then stick their WHOLE head underwater to try and grab them!* It was so amazing to watch how that instinct just kicked in!!

    off they go!!

Well, Bear's pack has a bladder on either side, so he mainly just carries water for the two of them. I can also throw in the leashes and such. I have to be careful not to put anything that can't get wet in there because he goes right in the water with the pack! His pack is pretty big, but I don't put too much in there because he's not quite ready for that. I'm trying to slowly increase his load - and the water is actually pretty darn heavy! Jackson usually doesn't wear one, but I just decided to throw on Bear's old pack - i put treats and bags in there (really not much). On these short hikes they really don't need to have the packs, but I want to get them used to them and soon be able to carry their own appropriate weight load for when we go on longer hikes. Makes life a lot easier when they can carry their own stuff!!

oh, then you MUST get this book: Afoot and Afield in San Diego County by Jerry Schad. I'm not sure where you live in Southern Cal. but I just looked and he also has:

Afoot and Afield in Los Angeles County
Afoot and Afield in Orange County
    101 Hikes in Southern California
    Trail Runner's Guide: San Diego
    Top Trails: Los Angeles

This is by far the BEST book for hikes!! It's broken down into regions of the county. Each hike has a map and tells important things like distance, elevation gained, best times to go, difficulty, etc., whether you can bring dogs, if there are waterfalls...that sort of thing. My boyfriend and I swear by this book. We try to go on a hike every weekend with the dogs, and it has allowed us to explore so many different areas in San Diego that I would never have known about!!
