    DefaultElephant-skin elbows?

Once these develop, can they ever heal?

Both boys have them. Crash had them. I know it's from resting on hard surfaces. Well, with Angus we've had no choice, given his tendencies to eat fluffy things.

My question is, does the fur ever grow back there? Or, is this something all dogs have as they get older? I really haven't paid attention to other people's dogs enough to notice :-[

Jasper just returned from three days at the kennels with his elbows raw !

Samson's elbows have never recovered from his first visits to the kennels

I'm curious to see the replies, as I was just wondering the same...
Zoe has them on both elbows; one actually looks like elephant-skin plus a hystiocytoma (sp?); the other side is not as rough, but long-ish and red. She lays on carpet or a rug at home; soft black squishy stuff at daycare.

Mira got her elbows rubbed raw once when I boarded her but the fur grew back and they are fine now. Brodie has the calluses and they have stayed. He lays with his elbows out beside his head (trident dog) so I know that is a major contributor to it. Mira never lays that way.
I now have them put down a cloth cover over the cement in the kennel if I have to board them.

There will always be some wear on those elbows. It's the nature of the beast. From time to time I use Bag Balm on the labs' elbows... keeps elephantitis to a minimum. Anything heavy with lanolin will help keep those callouses in check.

Funny... only my labs have them. Not the Beagles, not the Border, not the Lhasa... hmmmmmmm

Interesting...I never recall any of our dogs having calluses now that you mention it. Even our lab mix.

Once Wes got 'em, no amount of Bag Balm could get rid of 'em....

I don't recall any of our dogs having them either now that you've all mentioned it!

Taffy has them (has for years ) and this girl RARELY sleeps or lays on a hard surface. If it is very very warm, she will sleep on our wood floor, but mostly every night she is on our bed. The rest of the house is fully carpeted. And she only lays on the cement in the yard in the summer and only for short periods when she's doing her sun-worshipper routine.

Well that's really interesting! It's seeming like it has more to do with HOW they lay, rather than where...

Patton got them last summer, they went away over the winter.

I just figured it was a result of his winter coat covering them up, I never knew they had a tendency to stick around. Bummer...I hate his 'summer' elbows.
