DefaultAll you lab families with boats

My BF just emailed me that the offer he made on a powerboat (28' cruiser) got accepted. If all goes well with the inspection, we should have it in the water within about 2 weeks. It has a nice, low, swim platform as well as ladder, and we're thinking that Toby will love it - his two favorite activities (other than eating) are swimming and going for rides, so this will hopefully be a great combination of those.

So my questions are these: what is the best kind of doggy PFD to get him? We'll definitely be getting a life jacket with a handle on the back, but are there other features that we should look for? Some brands that are better avoided, others that should definitely be considered? Also, how did your dogs initially respond to boat rides, and is there anything special we should do (other than the PFD and making sure he's safe and on lead initially) before we take him out? Any other advice?

Thanks in advance. We're pretty excited about it.

Oh, also, the boat does not have a name, so even though it's had a previous owner, we get to actually christen it. We've been toying with a lab-related theme, and what we've come up with that we like best so far is "Chien d'Eau" (Water Dog in French, pronounced "shen-doh" for those who never studied the language, apologies if I sound pedantic to those who did!). But we're certainly open to suggestions, so feel free to offer them!

Our dogs hate when the engine is being started...so we learned from the first one, to introduce them to it with the engine already running.
Then as they got more used to it, it wasnt so startling for them.

We got them the Outward Hound brand and have had no problems, yes the handle is the key!
    Congrats on your new addition!

No boat here, but this one looks pretty rugged...

Some of the ones I've seen, I don't know if the handle could repeatedly haul a wet lab out of the water?

My dogs love to go out in our boat - "The Labradory". I keep them on lead and I sit in front of the console, with a dog on each side on the forward seats. Both of my dogs adapted to the boat almost instantly.

Congrat's on the purchase! I love the name too!

Let me know what you decide on... my folks just bought a 24ft sail boat and hopefully next summer we'll get to spend some time on it.... MAYBE we'll take CoCo out, but that would be up to the Captains!
