I am the proud pet of a 6 month-old yellow lab. Took him to the Super Retriever Championship in Hot Springs, Arkansas this weekend. Up until now he has always been a spaz around people, always wanting to jump on them and generally rude. Imagine how nervous I was taking him into this big group of people, noise, dogs, gunshots, etc.. As labs always do, he did the exact OPPOSITE!!! He was the perfect gentleman, obeyed every command, let everyone slobber all over him and love on him! (Which he ate up!!) Met the handlers and dogs for the super fly and they gave me a few tips on training Roux to jump and even let us get up there and make a few jumps. He jumped a whopping 7 feet! LOL He would run as hard as he could to the end of the dock, stop, then belly flop in. LOL Not bad for a first try and he absolutely LOVED it! By the end of it I would go to meet him at the ramp and he would run past me up the stairs and be waiting at the top looking at me like I am moving to slow. Too funny this breed is!!
We had such a good time!! The handlers at the competition were very helpful and nice! Tom Dropik and his dog Tucker were great as well as his 2nd dog in the competition Rocky. He has a great website on jumping at www.sportmutt.com. Really nice guy and great trainer and lover of the breed.
