Hi...I am posting for my sister in law who is looking for a reputable English Lab breeder in the NJ, NY, PA, or CT area.... We are located in NJ but willing to travel about 2/3 hours....

    Lots of great recommendations above

I just wanted to give some feedback on why those were recommended and how to see the good from the bad.

A good breeder (one you should support) will do health clearances (all of them) on all dogs prior to breeding and ensure they pass. Labs are unfortunately plagued with lots of very bad health issues due to overbreeding/not being careful. Hips, elbows, eyes, heart, eic and cmn should all be done. these are not done at a "vet check-up" they are tests evaluated by professionals. Ask to see proof

A good breeder proves their dogs. not the grandparents or a few generations down, teh actual dogs they are using for breeding (so the mom and dad of the litter) are proven in some kind of venue to prove their worthyness of breeding (because all labs are cute and should have a killer personality). Conformation (show), field, hunt are the usual venues. If you say you want an "english" lab then you are looking for a breeder that proves their dogs in conformation. (otherwise "english" just meanst he dog is from england )

Litter must remain together until 8 weeks of age.

Then there is other stuff that I personally prefer. Like raising the litter indoors so the pups are socialised to the family and house sounds. They shoudl ask YOU many questions about why you want a lab and your lifestlye (they want their pups to go to homes that are suitable). They should pick the puppy that is the bset fit for you (not let you pick at random) or tell you which 2-3 puppies, based on your description of lifestlye and wants, is a good fit.

There is a specialty show in New Jersey the middle of next month... I highly recommend coming out! You'll be able to see a ton of dogs and meet a bunch of breeders in one place and see what you like/don't like first hand.

Not stupid at all A "benched show" is one where the dogs are required to stay on the grounds and be available to the public for the entire day. At an "unbenched show" the dogs may leave once they are done in the ring. Don't be fooled though... a specialty is an all day affair for most, so you'll have ample opportunity to meet dogs and talk to breeders! There are only a handful of "benched" shows left in the US... westminster, chicago, detroit (actually not having it this year ) and I believe one out west.

Make sure to bring rain gear and boots- it seems to always rain at least one day during Mid-Jersey.
