    Thumbs upThe Beach 2nd attempt

Since it was too hot at home again, I dismissed the cleaning day . I decided to give the beach a try again.

Between the last time and today, I was able to create off-leash experiences and obedience. Additionally, since he did not play with the ball at the beach last time, I teached him how to retrieve!

Today, I let him off leash at the parking lot. Worked everything as expected. It is important to tell him to stay before he goes to the other dogs, otherwise my command is "lost." This does not bother me, since he is just sniffing and then coming to me right away. He even loved the water today! I threw the ball into the water and he retrieved it happily. However, there are some flaws If you throw the ball and he does not look into the right direction, he does not care about the ball and I have to wait until the ocean gives my ball back. Or, for example, he retrieves the ball but he lets it go way before he reaches me. Then, again, I have to beg the ocean to give my ball back
I am pretty sure I could improve this by more training. Unfortunately, the beach is an hour drive.

I finished of the day with rubbing him off with a towel and letting him stand around in the sun to get dry

He is now very tired and sleeps under the table.

That is awesome! Not every Lab is a retrieving maniac, he may never have been played with and taught to retrieve.

The only thing I was a bit worried about if he is able to swim. I think he can, since all dogs can.

You're making wonderful progress with Smiley and it sounds as though you're enjoying the training experience. That's great!
One thing - your command word "lost" - how do you use that command? What is it meant to achieve? In other words, when you say "lost", what do you expect Smiley to do?

Sounds like a fun day. Only time Erns retrieves is the ball in the sea. Often he doesn't see where it lands and I lose a ball o wait for the sea to give it back.

I wondered what the word "lost" meant too. Labchris that is not asked in a bad way it is asking for interest.
When I got Ernie each time I told him to get "off" the sofa he refused. When I went to pull his collar to get him off he became annoyed. I later learned his previous owners command for stay was "off". Poor boy was confused.

The command is not literally "lost." I meant to say that if you say "stay" (or "Smiley, no") too late, the command is lost, it has no effect anymore. But that is usually ok, since I evaluate the dogs way before he sees them.
