Each time when we are driving around in the car, he is looking out of the window. No way that he would sleep! The only time when he sleeps in the car is after a long walk, but even then he just sleeps for like 5 minutes
I wonder how they see the world from their perspective when they look out the car window.

I know I have wondered the same thing Mine never ever sleep in the car.
We had a Cocker Spaniel growing up and he would always duck whenever we drove under an overpass! I guess he thought we were about to hit it. Funniest on the highways because we'd go under a few in a row, and every time he ducked!
We live out in a very rural area. Jack sees deer, horses, cows, small woodland creatures. Every now and then he'll get to really sniffing (more then usual). On long rides he'll lie his head down but still has his eyes and nose going
I have one of each:
Rukus is ALWAYS sniffing, looking out the window, trying to get his head out the window etc.
Dozer will stretch out along the backseat (or sometimes across the floor) and fake nap. Sure, his eyes are closed, but I know he's not really sleeping.
Ivy is the same way. She loves to look out the window and it's funny to see her tail wag every time she sees a random person walking on the sidewalk. She has a harness so some times I'll roll the window down for her and it gives her just enough room to rest her head on the door. Her ears flap in the wind and people always smile really big as they drive by because it's such a hilarious sight. I joke with the kids that I'm going to get her one of those little hats with the goggles and take a picture.
Dogs are like 3 year olds. They can't stand to miss anything and want to experience every second of life, so a car ride is sensation overload. Ivy loves being in the car.
Maxx loves the car and I have also wondered what they are thinking. His tail and nose never stop and I love the smiles on peoples's faces when they see a happy, wiggly Lab!

Sometimes the hardest part isn't letting go - but learning to start over.
Here is what my crew daydream about:
"Ooooooooohhhhh... will mom make the cold air in the house? We like that!"
"Ooooooooohhhhh... will mom make it warm in the house? With our floor blankets? We like that!"
