Buddy and I are taking a Novice Rally class. The rally course is a series of stations where the dog and handler must execute commands: Sit Stay, Front, Go behind etc. The first thing Buddy taught me here is that when everybody else uses chicken chunks, hot dog bits, or cheese, Cheerio pieces is not going to cut it.
The second thing he taught me is Cheese IS GOOD. Shoveling cheese into his mouth like a stoker feeding the boiler of a steam locomotive while executing commands achieves amazing results.
The other day I got a cheese stick out of the fridge Buddy fell into heel position, walked all the way around me sat front, gave me a high five and went into a down all in one smooth seamless motion without taking his eyes off the cheese.
Tonight he barked. Thinking he wanted out, I headed for the door at which point he got into heel position real tight. I stopped and he sat front and then sniffed my hand. He did not want to go out. He wanted cheese!
LOL. Doesn't take them long to figure stuff out.
Love it, Andy! Now that you know what to do, better make sure you do it! LOL
Jackie, Champ, and Buddy
Love it when they get us trained!
I should take stock in string cheese I use so much. They are smart little buggers an't they! The problem with chicken or steak with me, is that just as much goes down my throat as the dog's!

Now that Buddy finally has you trained, move to the front of the class. I love how smart these dogs are!
What a character he is. He is definitely training you well!

Sometimes the hardest part isn't letting go - but learning to start over.
Ha! I've seen this before when they really want the treat (cheese) they demonstrate all that they have learned without being asked to show their worthiness. The other day I got a cheese stick out of the fridge Buddy fell into heel position, walked all the way around me sat front, gave me a high five and went into a down all in one smooth seamless motion without taking his eyes off the cheese.
