Recap: Noticed Koivu slipping on slick surfaces weeks ago, some pelvic limb weakness; took him to the vet and had negative xrays, 2 weeks of steroids with no improvement.
Took him to the veterinary neurologist today, fully expecting to have to sedate him and do an MRI. The good news is she didn't find anything particularly bad on exam. She noticed some pain and tightness in his lumbar spine and said I could do an MRI now or try chiropractor/acupuncture first and then MRI if that doesn't help. I picked the 2nd plan and she seemed to think that was the way to go.
So, he's still on activity restriction and we have a first appointment with a chiro/acupuncture vet on Tuesday afternoon.
Wish us luck, I'm really hoping this relieves his problem. I'd like to avoid spinal (or any other) surgery for him if at all possible.
The immediate challenge will be next weekend when I take him with me to spend a long weekend with my parents and their dog (he's a humper). I always watch them, but obviously will have to add an extra layer of control on them.
Good thoughts coming.
I have been trying acunpture and am pleasantly surprised at the results. I think with the NSAIDS it has helped. I am on the fence with alternative treatments, but sometimes you have to try what ever there is in the hope it will help.
That is great news! Good luck with the treatment plan, I sure hope it helps.

Sometimes the hardest part isn't letting go - but learning to start over.
Good luck with the treatment plan. Another option you might want to consider is hydrotherapy - I took Gin during her last few months and she really enjoyed it. Of course, I wasn't going to build muscle or anything, I just wanted to give her some relief, but I was told that hydrotherapy is great for the spine and central nervous system.
Good luck with the treatment plan. I hope it helps Koivu.
Good luck with your appointment! I hope this treatment option works out for Koivu!
Sometimes all they need is a simple spinal adjustment. They get things out of place just like we do. I hope that's all Koivu needs!
