    DefaultAfter all these years (NLR)

my Duke (10 YO) is still haunted by his past. I adopted him at 9 months when his mom told her young girls to find him a new home in 2 weeks or she would have him put down. He was afraid of everyone, including me, and everything. But MItzi and Judy helped him feel safe in his new home. I especially had trouble getting him back in the house; he was afraid to come throught the door as I stood there holding it open. I imagined someone had hurt him as he went through a doorway. Found out that if I hold the door open facing the door so he passes my back rather than front, he will go through. He slowly improved every year, but this morning, he wouldn't come into the house until I turned around and he passed through behind my back. Abuse of a sensitive puppy can last a lifetime.

Coming to live with you was the best thing for Duke, Barbara. That is so sad that people can be so mean to a puppy. At least he is loved now & has had a wonderful life with you & your gang.

Poor guy. I bet he was beaten for not coming in quickly enough as a puppy.

The dog I am fostering now acted weird this week after puking in his crate. I put him outside when I cleaned it up and he refused to come back in. I had to go out and lead him in and he was petrified. (this happened 3 times in the middle of the night Tuesday) I can only assume he was punished before for making a mess in his crate. Poor guy.

Training a dog with punishment is just so wrong headed most of the time.

How sad. It sounds lie what happened just goes to prove how much these situations impact even an animal for the rest of their life. I am glad he is a part of your pack now.

That is so sad. Thank goodness he found you and has had a wonderful life. It makes so angry when people mistreat animals, I sincerely hope there is a special place in hell for them.

Looking at your picture I talke it Duke is the one in the middle. Sad that someone could abuse someone that sweet looking. I see the girls are lovin on him now. The picture reminds me of an Oreo cookie in reverse. So adorable.
