He started going downhill Tuesday. Last night I knew it was time. This morning the vet suggested it was possibly a cancer or more probably a neurological problem. During the exam he was very good until she tried to examine his right ear. This was the one and only time i ever saw him bare his teeth and snarl. He was gone before she finished the injection. So it was time.
Back in 2001 the Lake Erie Lab Rescue asked me to look at a Lab 25 miles south. I tried all week but come Friday night I was still hung up at work. We had an out of town trip planed for that Saturday so I thought I would try again on Monday. As soon as I thought that I had severe intestinal cramps, nausea, and a headache. I decided there was no way we could make the Saturday trip feeling like this so would go see the 4 year old one eyed yellow Lab instead. The moment I thought this all of the pain stopped. Instantly. I am not sure who rescued who. God let us hold Jack's leash for almost 12 years. He loved to retrieve and swim. While we called it counter surfing and pillaging, Jack considered what he did as "salvage work". He had a great grin, a great nose and was a marvelous companion. He made sure we went to the Bark Park almost every day. He had to have a squeaky toy to retrieve at the park. Carried it with him and every dog there knew it was Jack's toy and to leave it alone. We miss him.
