DH and I are moving into our first house in a couple of weeks (yay!), and I'm feeling a bit apprehensive about how Dozer is going to handle it. He really hates any sort of change. In fact, he'll freeze up if the process of taking him outside is different than usual.
Does anyone have any tips/suggestions/advice on how to make the transition as easy as possible for him? I should also mention that he really hates being confined in his kennel....but we're willing to put him in it if it's the best route.
Maybe move all the furniture, etc in first before taking him over. Also if there is any way to get an item from the house to bring to your current home to get him used to the smell. These things might help. I wish I had some better ideas to help you, hopefully others will have some good ideas. Good luck and CONGRATULATIONS!

Sometimes the hardest part isn't letting go - but learning to start over.
What I did with Shadow was to bring her over to let her see the place when it was empty. I brought a few of her toys and put one in each room for her to 'discover' as she checked the place out. On moving day, I brought her and her crate over with the first load, and kept her in it in the corner of the living room, with a frozen Kong, while we moved the rest. After we were able to shut the doors and leave them shut, I let her out. She checked out the furniture, room by room, then settled right down like we'd always been here. She had fun checking out the new yard.

If possible, start taking him to the new house for visits, then go back to your current place. let him sniff around and mark "his" place
Thanks for the advice everyone. We need to go out and do some work this weekend, perhaps I'll bring him along and let him sniff around.
Hopefully they'll like the new place...it's on a ton of land and there is a river within walking distance of the house.
